Let’s talk honestly: perfectionism often disguises itself as protection; but in reality, it keeps us stuck in fear, indecision, and self-doubt.
As an NLP Life Coach, I’ve worked with many clients who feel overwhelmed by uncertainty and are unsure of what step to take next. But here’s the liberating truth:
Empowerment doesn’t happen all at once. It’s built through the choices we make: daily, consistently, imperfectly.
Let’s explore how you can start shifting your mindset, using neuroscience and NLP, to take empowered action right now.
Understanding the Nature of Perfectionism
Perfectionism can be a heavy burden. It often leads us to believe that we must achieve flawless results before we can take action. This mindset can paralyze us, making it difficult to move forward.
Instead of waiting for the perfect moment, we must learn to embrace the beauty of imperfection. Each step we take, no matter how small, is a step toward growth and empowerment.
The Cost of Waiting for Perfection
When we wait for perfection, we miss out on opportunities. We might lose valuable time, experiences, and connections. The truth is, the journey is often more important than the destination.
By shifting our focus from perfection to progress, we open ourselves up to new possibilities. We learn, adapt, and grow through our experiences, even when they don’t go as planned.
Step 1: Recognise the Choice Point
Even in moments of anxiety or inaction, you're still making a choice, just not an intentional one. Empowerment begins with recognising that:
Every response is a choice. Instead of reacting automatically, you can learn to respond consciously.
Try This:
Ask yourself:
What am I choosing in this moment?
Is this choice aligned with who I want to become?
Step 2: Understand the Brain’s Wiring
Your brain is designed for efficiency, not empowerment. It wants to stick to what’s familiar, whether that’s procrastination, negative self-talk, or playing small.
But thanks to neuroplasticity, your brain can form new pathways every time you act differently.
Empowered action literally reshapes your brain.
Neuroscience Technique:
Use mental contrasting + implementation intentions:
Visualise the future you want (a confident you, taking action).
Acknowledge what stands in the way.
Create a simple "If X happens, I’ll do Y" plan. e.g., If I feel scared, I’ll breathe deeply and take one small step anyway.
Step 3: Use NLP Language Shifts to Reframe Your Reality
NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) teaches us that our language shapes our experience. Shifting your internal dialogue helps you create a more empowering map of your world.
Swap These, NLP-Style:
“I have to…” → “I choose to…”
“I can’t do this…” → “I’m learning how to…”
“I’m not ready.” → “I can start imperfectly and adjust as I go.”
Remember Voltaire's wisdom:
“Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.” Because “good” gets you started. And once you start, momentum builds confidence.
Step 4: Embrace Imperfect Action
You don’t need to leap. You just need to move. Start where you are. Use what you have. Take one imperfect step today.
Empowered Action Framework:
Pause – Recognise the urge to wait until it’s perfect.
Reframe – “Done is better than perfect.”
Act Small – Send the email. Post the idea. Have the conversation.
Reflect – What did I learn? What’s the next small step?
Step 5: Build Self-Awareness as Your Foundation
Empowerment thrives on self-awareness. When you know your patterns, beliefs, and emotional triggers, you gain power over them.
Self-Awareness Techniques:
Daily check-ins; Ask: What am I feeling? What triggered it?
Values audit: What matters most to you? Are your choices reflecting those values?
Parts integration (NLP): Acknowledge and align the conflicting parts of yourself (e.g., the part that wants success vs. the part that fears rejection).
